Would you give up your birthday presents to support the persecuted church?

Sounds pretty crazy right?! But this is exactly what a Thirteen Three supporter recently did to raise money and awareness for persecuted Christians.

Marshall Law is a 22-year-old from Gladesville, NSW. Marshall was challenged in his faith after hearing stories about the courageous faith of persecuted Christians at a Thirteen Three fundraiser organised by friend.

I was blown away by the sheer magnitude of joy many persecuted Christians experience amidst shocking and atrocious persecution. To me, it is awe-inspiring that not even being beaten with rods will stop them from being satisfied in God!

Marshall contacted Thirteen Three in August – he wanted his birthday party to be a fundraising event for the persecuted church. He hired out Balmain Town Hall and invited 200 of his friends to help him celebrate, asking them to donate to Thirteen Three instead of giving a birthday present.

He gave a birthday speech and shared his passion for the persecuted church and some of his favourite stories from Tortured for Christ by Richard Wurmbrand. Richard was a pastor in Communist Romania who was imprisoned for 14 years because of his ministry. After his release, Richard was brought to the USA and later founded Voice of the Martyrs in 1967.

It was a deal: we preached and they beat us. We were happy preaching; they were happy beating us – so everyone was happy.
